The second half of the 19th century saw the advent of the children’s magazine. Several of the publishing houses that printed and sold books for children produced monthly or bi-monthly magazines with serialized stories that always ended just as the hero or heroine was about to encounter a dangerous opponent. Wide-eyed children waited breathless with anticipation for the mailman to deliver the next installment. One of the most famous of these was St. Nicholas magazine.
