Photo by A. A. Robinson, Castine, ME.
Abigail Hawes, living on the corner of Pleasant and Court Streets with her sister Sarah, apparently helped with this occasion for she writes in her 1880 diary: Monday, Nov. 16 - I lend Table - Chair - Coat of Arms & buckles to Mrs. Cate.; Wednesday, Dec. 1 - . . . I gave Brass Buttons to Mrs. Hooper for Children’s Costume.; Thursday, Dec. 2 - Mrs. Cate borrows old buckles for a Washington costume. 12 children represent the Republican Court.
