CANCELLED Nature-Friendly Ornament Making Workshop

  • Hutchins Education Center 112 Perkins Street Castine, ME 04421 United States (map)

❄️🎄Due to today's snowy weather, the Nature-Friendly Ornament Making Workshop is cancelled. The Holiday Tree Trail in Witherle Woods Preserve continues through January 6 and our campus is still a satellite location so we hope you stay safe and spread the holiday cheer in the coming weeks by decorating trees! ❄️🎄

Nature-Friendly Ornament Making Workshop for the Holiday Tree Trail!

The Wilson Museum is delighted to offer a nature-friendly ornament making workshop in collaboration with the Castine Arts Association on Sunday, December 8! Join us in our Hutchins Education Center anytime between 12 and 3 pm to make fun and festive decorations! Supplies for ornaments will be provided by both organizations and participants are welcome to bring must-have craft supplies from home, as long as they are nature-friendly. (See the list below for recommendations on which type of craft supplies to use.)

This is a free event and all ages are welcome!

Plus, come decorate our trees!

In connection with this workshop, the Wilson Museum is participating in the Castine Arts Association’s fifth annual Holiday Tree Trail as a satellite location! This tradition invites individuals and families to choose a tree along a designated trail in Witherle Woods Preserve and adorn that tree with nature-friendly decorations. This year, the community is welcome to also decorate trees of all kinds on the Wilson Museum campus!

The tree decorating project runs November 29 through January 6 and decorating may take place anytime during that timeframe. Those who decorate are asked to remove all their decorations during the week following January 6. The Holiday Tree Trail in Witherle Woods Preserve is in cooperation with the Maine Coast Heritage Trust.

What exactly are nature-friendly decorations?

Nature-friendly materials include (but are not limited to):

  • ribbons and yarn

  • fabric, wood, or plastic ornaments — large enough to avoid an animal swallowing them

  • popcorn, cranberries, dried fruit or corn, cookies

  • pinecones, lichen/moss, winterberries

  • seashells

Please avoid:

  • breakable glass ornaments

  • tinsel in any form — strands or garlands

  • plastic garlands capable of shedding

  • artificial snow spray or flakes

  • glitter

  • small objects that could be swallowed by a woodland creature

  • anything that has the potential to combust, such as candles or electronic/battery lights

Please note this is a daylight activity so no illumination is necessary or advised.
