You have probably heard of roadside geology but what about seaside geology? Penobscot Bay has some fascinating geological formations evident from historic climate events and the clash of the continents that can be explored by land or by sea. On Thursday, July 13 or Saturday, July 15, join Castine Kayak Adventures (CKA) and international geologist Skip Hobbs for a unique and informational kayaking excursion exploring the varied geology of the Castine area.
Launching from Castine Kayak’s docks at Eaton’s Wharf, the group will explore a variety of geological sites of interest and learn how geology has impacted Castine’s formation and history. Many stops will be included for learning and observing as well as an island lunch provided by CKA – choose your meal preference when you sign-up!
Also included in the day’s activities will be a visit to the Wilson Museum for a close-up look at the Maine rocks and minerals participants will see along the coast. On Thursday, the field trip will start with a visit to the Wilson Museum (8:30 am) for an overview of geology and a morning treat of coffee and muffins. On Saturday, the field trip will end with a visit to the Wilson Museum (3:30 pm) to review what was learned on the kayaking excursion.
Reservations – Ticket price for this program is $150.00 per person with 10% of proceeds supporting the Wilson Museum’s programming. Sign-up while spots are available at www.castinekayak.com or call 207-866-3506 to register by phone.
