Change is natural and necessary, and navigating it requires intention and consideration. On Tuesday, August 22, hear from Head Gardener Wendy Dolliver about how Thuya Garden transitioned from private to public ownership and the changes they have made to be a more sustainable garden while maintaining their “English Garden” appearance.
In 1928, Thuya Garden transitioned from private to public ownership and, in 1956, experienced a major replanting with plants from Beatrix Farrand’s estate following her death. Recently, in the seven years Wendy has been Head Gardner, she and her team have maintained the “English garden” appearance but have made subtle and important changes to it. For example, more native plants have been introduced to increase biodiversity of both flora and fauna. Sustainability is a key goal in this organically managed garden. The team experiments with soil mixtures in the planters as well as enriching the soil in the beds. And the lawns trampled all season by visitors hold up very well thanks to tricks of enrichment added by the staff. Today, Thuya Garden is part of the Land & Garden Preserve that includes the Rockefeller Garden and the Asticou Azalea Garden.
This presentation is free of charge and can be attended in-person or virtually. To attend virtually, register via the registration link on the Wilson Museum’s calendar of events.
