Living History

Living History at the Wilson Museum is a family favorite!

Visitors of all ages love the engaging activities and demonstrations offered each Wednesday and Sunday afternoon in July and August.

Haven’t been before? We have lots of fun activities for you to experience across campus.

  • Wood Shop: Our friendly staff and volunteers will happily help you build a small toy boat, wooden spatula, or wooden treasure box in the wood shop.

  • Boat Shop: Next door, the passionate volunteers and staff in the boat shop will eagerly invite you to help them build a life-sized wooden boat - no experience necessary!

  • Blacksmith Shop: Follow the smell of smoke to the blacksmith shop where you can help crank up the heat by pulling the bellows which keeps the fire going and the iron hot.

  • Perkins House: Have you ever seen a rope bed? Tour the historic John and Phebe Perkins House to see the furnishings of a late 1700s / early 1800s Castine home including (you guessed it) a rope bed. Tours are $5 per guest and begin on the hour at 2, 3, and 4 PM. Tickets can be purchased in the Perkins Gallery on campus.

  • Galleries: The Wilson Museum and Perkins Gallery will be open for general visitation, plus an art show will be running in the Education Center from July 10 to August 6.

All living history programs are kid-friendly, open to the public, and free of charge.

Special Demonstrations

Demonstrations for historic cooking, weaving, and rigging are sprinkled throughout the summer.

Special guest demonstrations will be noted here on the days they occur.

Living History at the Wilson Museum is made possible by the generous support of Camden National Bank.
